Causes of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in animals can (but are not limited to) an accident, surgery, attacks from other animals, human-inflicted abuse, life-threatening illnesses, separation or death of a loved one, being lost and changes in the environment.
PTSD is more likely to occur when the incident is severe and prolonged. Intentional and consistent human inflicted harm tend to be more traumatic tends to be more traumatic than any singularly inflicted incident. The extent to which the event was unexpected, uncontrollable and inescapable also plays a role.
Symptoms of PTSD can include severe anxiety, less interest in common activities, excessive panting, trembling, hiding, less control over toilet habits, suddenly placed aggression, withdrawal and self-destructive behaviour.
